COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this course is to present the materials, methods and acceptance criteria for producing soldered electrical assemblies. This course is a mix of lecture and hands-on designed as a certification for experienced solderers to prove they understand the correct way to achieve quality soldered connections.
This course is for students who are currently certified in the IPC J-STD-001 but need to renew within 6 months before expiration to keep current in the program without interruption. This course provides a thorough review of procedures and updated information on policies and program requirements, as well as demonstrating hands-on skill proficiency.
Participants must be able to read and proficiently interpret the language the class and exams are presented in. Exams are available in limited additional languages upon request. Successful passing of written and practical exams is required to attain certification. Two attempts at any exam are included in tuition paid. Additional charges will apply for more than two exam attempts.
COURSE STRUCTURE
CIS students can attend all or some of the following modules, CIT and CSE will attend all:
Module 1 – (mandatory for CIS) 4 hours Introduction/Overview
Overview of J-STD-001 requirements (the overall introduction and general requirements).
Module 2 – (optional for CIS) 4 hours Terminal and Post Soldering
Study of the J-STD requirements applicable to the assembly and soldering of Wires and Terminals and practical exercises for development and demonstration of soldering and inspection skills.
Module 3 – (optional for CIS) 1 hour PCB Requirements & Adhesives
Study the requirements for bare PCB damage along with conformal coating, encapsulation and staking adhesives. This module is required if taking modules 4, 5 & 6.
Module 4 – (optional for CIS) 3 hours Through Hole Component Soldering
Study of the J-STD requirements applicable to the assembly and soldering of Through Hole connections and practical exercises for development and demonstration of soldering and inspection skills.
Module 5 – (optional for CIS) 4 hours Surface Mount Component Soldering
Study of the J-STD requirements applicable to the assembly and soldering of Surface Mount components and practical exercises for development and demonstration of soldering and inspection skills. This includes fine pitch soldering.
Module 6 – (optional for CIS) 4 hours Inspection Module
Study of the theory and application of all inspection requirements of the J-STD-001. This module is designed for students that inspect to the J-STD-001 but do not solder. They will be required to perform an inspection of modules 2-5 assemblies per Class 3 requirements.
Optional add-on Space Hardware Addendum for CIS & CIT 4 hours
Study of the Space Hardware addendum which provides additional requirements over those issued in J-STD for those products that MUST survive the vibration and thermal cyclic environments of getting to and operating in space. This IS NOT a stand-alone module. It must be taught in conjunction with at least one other optional module, and a score of 80% or better must be achieved for this module.
