On November 11, also known as Veteran’s Day, many of us will be enjoying days off from school or work. While having a day off to relax, spend time with our loved ones, or catch up on errands is always nice, it turns out that we have a lot more than this day off to thank our veterans for. Let’s take a few minutes to explore the history behind this holiday.
On November 11, 1918, an armistice, or a temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between Germany and the Allies of World War I. This marked the end of The Great War, as it’s also known. November 11, 1918 was declared by President Woodrow Wilson to be the first Armistice Day. Observations of the holiday included parades, public gatherings, and a brief pause to business activities at 11 am. It wasn’t until 1938 that Armistice Day became Veteran’s Day and became a federal holiday. In the aftermath of World War II (which mobilized 16 million Americans) and the Korean War (which mobilized another 5.7 million), Veteran’s Day became dedicated to honoring American veterans of all wars, not just World War I.
In the US, an official wreath-laying ceremony is held at the Tomb of Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery every Veteran’s Day. Several states and cities around the country host parades and other celebrations to honor the veterans.
Veteran’s Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, which we’ve written about previously. While Memorial Day honors service members who died in war or as a result of injuries from the battlefield, Veteran’s Day honors all American veterans, living or dead. The holiday especially honors living veterans who serve the US both during war and peacetime.
Blackfox is grateful to all US veterans for their service to our country. The Blackfox Training Institute is approved for the training of veterans and eligible persons under the provisions of Title 38, United States Code, and is recognized by the State of Colorado as an Approved Private Occupational School. These credentials qualify Blackfox as an approved technical training center for eligible veterans wanting to use their GI Bill for education benefits.
This is the first program of its kind to provide veterans with little to no industry experience with the skills to grow their careers in the electronic assembly industry. Upon completion of the course, veterans can qualify for employment in aerospace, defense, medical, and electronic contract manufacturing.
